They are an imitation of nature, and fully manifest the beauty of nature. Evoking an air well 天 井 , flanked by intricate wooden window pane on the top while anchored by a array of stones at the bottom, this scene illustrates a typical vignette of a classical styled residence with the enduring presence of nature and man-made element within a single frame. The stone scene is illustrated through the modern style ink painting by Singaporean artist Tay Bak Chiang. He has developed an innovative technique of using powdered colour pigments to produce distinct texture in traditional Chinese ink painting. This set of works also marks his progressive attempts to move away from representational forms and introduce new perspectives in the portrayal of nature with minimalistic simplicity. Stones, to him, are not lifeless objects, but are bestowed with worldly experiences and personal expressions. This which, he expresses through his unique visual language that is in synch with current contemporary art ideas. To him, nature is perfection, balance and harmony. He also believes his work should bear the imprint of his environment and reflect the spirit of contemporary times, even if it is rooted in Chinese ink painting. Hence, he often interprets nature themes while he continues to push the boundaries and contemporize the genre of Chinese painting through the use of acrylic and pigments on canvas.
